PUPPY & VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE
ROSE TIERNEY ~ OTTAWA, ONT. CANADA
Rose was born and educated in London UK. It was while accompanying her
husband on a four-year tour in Copenhagen, Denmark that they met and fell
in love with the Bernese Mountain Dog. She considers herself fortunate to
have had the opportunity to “apprentice” under Ina Olsen of Tertzo Kennel,
one of the top breeders in her homeland. She purchased her first Berner in
1986, her second in 1987 and the following year returned to Canada. In
1989 Ina loaned her a Danish Top Producing Stud dog to start her program.
She enjoys working with this breed and the many dedicated people involved.
She is committed to producing a dog that can meet the demand of today’s
society while maintaining the physical ability to work in his traditional
role. She actively shows in conformation and participates in obedience and
has recently introduced two of her dogs to draftwork. She has had the
benefit of showing in Canada and the United States and under FCI

the opportunity to meet competitors and their dogs from many parts of the
country. She has recently started writing a column for Dogs in Canada.

DRAFT TEST JUDGES
SANDEE BAKER ~ RED DEER, ALBERTA, CANADA
Sandee currently lives with two Berners (Ischna and Reilly) and has been
involved
with the breed since 1995. She had her breath taken away while watching
this
wonderful breed at numerous dog shows. In 1996 her boy, Reilly wormed his
way
into her heart and over the past 6 years they have been working
successfully
together in the conformation, agility and obedience rings as well as
drafting their way across North America! They have had the pleasure of
achieving their Can DD,and US NDD and DD titles together and those
experiences and training led Sandee to learn more and to pursue becoming a
draft judge.
Sandee has co-hosted draft clinics and trials with Wanda Tait, had the
privilege of judging at the Quebec Bernese Mtn Dog Club’s 1st Draft test
at
the 2001 National Specialty and also at the 2001 Draft test in Edmonton.
She
is thrilled to be working with Phil and Wanda at this Trial and looks
forward
to seeing those wonderful partnerships that are formed between the
handlers
and their dogs as they demonstrate the working ability and true
companionship that this breed is known for.
PHIL CHAGNON ~ RICHMOND, B.C. CANADA
Phil has had dogs in his life for as long as he can remember but became
actively involved in canine ‘sports’ in the late 1980’s. He was blessed to
be owned by two extraordinary Bernese Mountain Dogs (Bandit & daughter
Halo) who were agile and eager to try almost anything. They introduced
Phil and wife Lea to draft, obedience, agility, herding and conformation
competition and became the first male and first female Dual Versatility
Bernese Mountain dogs. As well as championship, obedience and agility
titles (in both Canada & the US) Bandit and Halo earned Canadian DD, US
Novice Draft and US Brace Novice Draft titles. Bandit & Phil also worked
together to earn their Canadian DDX title and the senior BMDCA Draft title
(DD).
Phil is qualified to judge both CKC and BMDCA draft tests and has
co-written the ‘Fun with Draft’ training manual for beginners. He is
currently a Director for the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Canada, the
Draft Representative for the BMDCSWBC, a Moderator for the Committee to
revise CKC Draft Regulations and an active member of numerous clubs. Phil
enjoys playing, working and training with his dogs (always careful not to
over train!) and loves to help people discover the amazing and lasting
bond that is created by ‘team work’. Currently Phil and Lea share their
home (and the Pets First office) with 2 Bernese Mountain Dogs (Bella &
Welkin).
WANDA TAIT ~ ROCKY MTN. HOUSE ALBERTA, CANADA
Born into a family with a passion for working dogs, it is no surprise that
Wanda’s life has also been entwined with that of her dogs. Wanda began
breeding Bernese Mountain Dogs in the mid-1980's under the kennel name
"Oberland". The Tait’s berners would often pull their children in toboggans,
sleighs and carts as well as regularly hiking in the mountains with their
packs. After becoming involved with the Newfoundland Club and Tubby
Miller, their more formal draft work began to take shape. Since that time,
she has seen drafting grow in popularity among berner owners and has
enjoyed taking an active part in the sport.
